Bangus Valley : The hidden paradise in north Kashmir

Located in the Kupwara district of Jammu and Kashmir, is a hidden gem waiting to be explored. This breathtaking valley is situated in the Pir Panjal range, surrounded by snow-capped mountains, lush green forests, and crystal clear streams .The valley’s name originates from the Sanskrit words “Van” meaning forest and “Gus” meaning grass .

Geography and Climate

Bangus Valley is situated at an altitude of 10,000 feet (3,000 meters) above sea level, with an estimated area of about 300 square kilometers .The valley is divided into two parts: Boud Bangus (Big Bangus) and Lokut Bangus (Small Bangus) .The valley’s terrain is characterized by linear elliptical bowls aligned along the east-west axis, surrounded by majestic mountains,The valley is home to a diverse range of flora and fauna, including medicinal plants, flowers, and trees . The forests and plains serve as breeding, feeding, and protection grounds for many wild animal species, such as musk deer, antelope, snow leopard, brown bear, and black bear.The valley is also a haven for birdwatchers, with resident birds like pheasants, tragopan, monal pheasant, black partridge, bush quail, and wild Fowl, Despite its natural beauty, Bangus Valley remains largely unexplored due to the lack of infrastructure and armed conflict in the area .

However, efforts are being made to develop the valley’s tourism potential, with the construction of roads and facilities . Visitors can enjoy trekking, camping, horseback riding, and nature walks in the valley,

Overall, Bangus Valley is a must-visit destination for nature lovers, adventure enthusiasts, and those seeking a tranquil retreat amidst breathtaking natural beauty.
